The Grand River Source Protection Plan is comprised of municipal chapters that contain the requirements (or policies) that detail how activities under the
Clean Water Act are regulated. The Wellington County chapter of the Grand River Source Protection Plan applies to all the Wellington County municipalities located within the Grand River watershed. The Grand River Source Protection Plan came into effect on July 1st, 2016. For Source Protection Plan policies to apply, the property must be located within a municipal well head protection area. For a significant drinking water threat policy to apply, certain groundwater vulnerability scores must be present (often score of 10).
Within Wellington County, the Grand River Source Protection Plan applies to the Township of Centre Wellington including Elora and Fergus, the Town of Erin (rural properties, western portion), Guelph/Eramosa Township including Rockwood, Eden Mills and Hamilton Drive subdivision, the Township of Mapleton including Drayton and Moorefield, the Township of Puslinch including Arkell and rural properties and the Township of Wellington North including Arthur.
